Service Description: Summary: Ocean Networks Canada demo in the Environmental Response Management Application (ERMATM) showcases high resolution winds modelled for the localized areas of British Columbia. The data presented wind velocities in cm/s. Vector size varies with resolution of the image. This tool will showcase near real-time data and wind forecast in the next release.
Description:The model wind velocities presented here have been run by the Environment Canada, Canadian Meteorological Center using the Pan-Canadian High Resolution Deterministic Prediction System (HRDPS) from the non-hydrostatic Global Environmental Multiscale (GEM) model (Côté et al., 1998; Girard et al., 2014) that solves the fully compressible Euler equations. The West domain for this model is currently operational with a resolution of 2.5km at 60˚N. This model follows a multi-grid nested scheme that takes initial and lateral conditions from the Regional Deterministic Prediction System (RDPS) and surface initial conditions for mean surface temperature and root zone soil moisture from the Canadian Land Data Assimilation System (CaLDAS, Carrera et al., 2015). A detailed description of this model and its validation can be found in Milbrandt et al. (2016).
For more information, data and metadata download from this model, please, visit the Environment Canada website: https://weather.gc.ca/grib/grib2_HRDPS_HR_e.html The data showcased here for demonstration purposes is from January 30th, 2017, considering the present time to be 9PM (21:00:00). The different times showcased are as follow: 0 hours = 21:00:00, 3 hour back = 18:00:00, 6 hours back = 15:00:00, 9 hours back = 12:00:00, 12 hours back = 09:00:00, 15 hours back = 06:00:00, 18 hours back = 03:00:00 and 21 hours back = 00:00:00. Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) is an international science facility hosted at the University of Victoria. ONC operates world-leading ocean observatories, innovative cabled infrastructure that supply continuous power and Internet connectivity to a broad suite of subsea instruments from coastal to deep-ocean environments including those used to measure earthquakes and tsunamis. These are complemented by autonomous or online systems on land, ferries, gliders and fixed mooring. For more information about Ocean Networks Canada, see: http://www.oceannetworks.ca. ONC’s global scientists and partners develop forecasting and early warning systems for sea state, tsunamis, earthquakes and storm surge.
