Summary: Ocean Networks Canada demo in the Environmental Response Management Application (ERMATM) showcases high resolution (500m) significant wave heights (m), modeled for the Salish Sea. This tool will showcase near real-time data and wind forecast in the next release.
Description: The modeled mean wave steepness presented here have been generated by Ocean Networks Canada using the WAVEWATCH IIIR model Version 4.18 (Gemmrich and Dewey, 2017). The WAVEWATCH IIIR model is a third-generation spectral wave model developed by an international science community. Detailed information about the model can be found in Tolman et al. (2002, 2016) and in the model manual, accessible here: http://polar.ncep.noaa.gov/mmab/papers/tn276/MMAB_276.pdf
The mean wave steepness is an indicator of how sharp is the shape of the wave. The wave steepness is the ratio of the significant wave height over the wave length. In this model, the wave steepness is calculated as:
Epsilon = (2*pi*Hs)/(g*Tm022)
Where Hs is the significant wave height, Tm02 is the mean wave period, and g is the gravitational acceleration. In the case of the Salish Sea, this model takes inputs from the NEMO model oceanic currents (see layers and metadata in Weather, Oceanography & Natural Hazards>Currents>Modeled currents) and the Environment Canada High Resolution Deterministic Prediction System (HRDPS) modeled winds (see layers and metadata in Weather, Oceanography, & Natural Hazards>Wind). Both, currents and winds are provided to the model at 3h intervals. The bathymetry grid used for the run of this model is a 500m resolution grid based on a blend of the global relief ETOPO1 (https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/global/global.html) and survey data from the Canadian Hydrographic Service (http://charts.gc.ca).

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) is an international facility hosted by the University of Victoria. ONC operates world-leading ocean observatories, innovative cabled infrastructure that supply continuous power and Internet connectivity to a broad suite of subsea instruments from coastal to deep-ocean environments including those used to measure earthquakes and tsunamis. These are complemented by autonomous or online systems on land, ferries, gliders and fixed mooring. For more information about Ocean Networks Canada, see: http://www.oceannetworks.ca. ONC’s global scientists and partners develop forecasting and early warning systems for sea state, tsunamis, earthquakes and storm surge.
